LAS VEGAS -- Freshman Matt Luca struck out 11 in the third no-hitter in UNLV history as the Rebels beat Tony Gwynn's San Diego State team 5-0 on Friday night.
In his fifth collegiate start, the right-hander walked two and another baserunner reached on an error in UNLV's first no-hitter since 1990. Luca, selected by Cincinnati in the 22nd round of last year's major league draft, improved to 2-0 and lowered his ERA to 3.58.
Eric Nielsen went 2-for-4 , and Robert VanKirk was 1-for-4 with two RBIs for the Rebels (21-8, 6-1 Mountain West Conference).
Mike Moat gave up five runs on eight hits in 5 1-3 innings for San Diego State (12-17, 5-2).
