I found a 81 toyota today that I'm thinkin about pickin up but I wanted to see your guy's thoughts about it first cuz well I know u know your shit. This truck would be drivin for a short time than I'd pretty much turn it into a crawler is my hopes for it.

Its an 81 with a 22r 4cyl motor, 5 speed man tran, warner lock outs on front, new breaks all the way around. 93xxx miles. Frame had rust but the guy went in an reinforced it and welded in new sections from my understanding. It has a 4 inch (arched leafs) and 31x10's on it.

Any comments will help with this, I've been lookin for a yota to buy and think I might have finally found a good one. thanks guys

If the body is good it's worth it. If the engine is strong it's worth it. But be careful that the frame has not been broken.

Yeah, I'm going to take a look at it today hopefully. I'm hopin the frame is good, He said that he did some reinforcing and welding so it might be a cobbled mess which would suck, but if not I'm gonna see if I can talk him down to 500 bucks he's askin 750 cash talks

Sounds like a roach. But most MN toyotas that old are. I would be very suspect on the "frame reinforcment" he has done.

Be really careful.

And Profs is for sale still - $2500 - worth it for the new rims, tires, and winch/bullbar alone.

Umm
86 toyota 4runner
130k on the engine
220k on the body
some rust (wheel wells, tailgate) Not too bad for the year.
new brakes, newer tires, new alternator, new battery.
It runs well but could use new plugs, wires.
The only thing that needs some major attention is the transmission [Big Grin]
It runs fine in 1-4th gear but not 5th. It vibrates and rattles in 5th. It woud run you $750 for a rebuilt tranny (ask Klaus) if you installed it. I would drive it till the tranny dies. It may last quite a while still. If your looking for a truck to wheel in, there are lots of us (klaus, mikey etc.) that can give you all the info you need on this truck. Let me know if your really interested, otherwise I may just hold on to it.

what do u want for it hauser? street legal? what motor does it have. my buddy with the cruiser has a mid 80's truck out at his place that we jumped tell the frame snapped in half but the tranny is still good. so hmmm might work out good.

Not gonna be able to make a cruiser tranny work. But you can call around and get a junkyard tranny for probably about 200-300 bucks. Unless you plan on doing frame-off work on the 81 your looking at I wouldn't be too excited about wheeling with it. Lots of shit is fixable on the trail but without a welder and some other tools it would be tough to fix a major frame brake! Also, unless your really after the old looks of the pre-1985 pickups I would look for a late '84 or 85 to get the 22re engine. Way stronger than the carb 22r. Also, it runs better at high angles and so on and so forth. The problem with going with a 1986 or newer pickup or 4-runner is IFS. Im not sure how serious you want to wheel but if you want to get into some rock-crawling I would highly recomend a solid front axle!

Anyway only my 2 cents worth. You may know all this shit already because I don't know you all that well. If you ever want to talk wheeling just give me an e-mail. mikewilliam@comcast.net

Naw you miss read what I said, he has a cruiser that's he uses for his crawler (dresser for like last 10 yrs and what not) but he also has a mid 80's pic up that we jumped tell it snapped in half. I have actrally been thinkin about building (fabracating) a crawler out of 2x4 steel for the frame and just a full cage for the body, but I'd like to use a toyota or rockwell running gear for the drive train. I found a later 80's Toyota with the fuel injected motor, which would be prime for angles like you said and all, the only thing is I just got laid off, along with that they took my Jeep and now I'm outta work so I'm lookin for a starter truck that I can drive for a short time than convert into a wheeler/crawler once I totally get back on my feet again. When I seen this truck I was like hmmm 4 inch lift (Arched leafs and not gay blocks) straight front axel, 93000 miles, but I was also worried about the frame cuz well with out a good foundation the truck is worthless.

But I'm actrally seriously wanting to get more into crawling and I want to build a nice truck. I found someone that can get my 2 &1/2 ton rockwell top spinners for about 1200 bucks a pair. I know I can do all the fabracation cuz I love doing that kinda thing, have a tube bender and all. But I don't know if I wanna go Yota or small chevy for a motor or what not. I'm trying to do this on a small over time budget and with this yota I could possibly do it while still driving the thing for a lil while. I wish I had the money to buy steve's truck but I don't have that extra cash laying around and I don't knwo when I'll start gettin my unemployment rolling in and when if at all I'll find somethin for a new job.

Anyways I've heard nothing but good about Yota crawlers, and thought I might wanna go that route. Anyways more insight would be usefull I still haven' gone to look at this thing and know its sitting. [beer]

nah, a car. I decided that I can 4-wheel vicariously through you guys [Wink] I can either do truck crap and then 4-wheel and break it so I have to fix it again, or buy a car, fix it up once and drive it. I am buying a 1972 Datsun 240Z tomorrow. It was the same car my dad had when we were kids so I was pretty excited to find one in nice shape. The car is rust free and runs well. It needs a little work (brakes, ujoint) but is in far better condition than the majority I looked at. Let me know if anyone is looking for a truck.

I was thinking 1,000 bucks. If it is for you or someone I know, we can talk about it. I am just trying to recoup some of the cost of buying this car. I have room for 3 cars in my garage, not 4 heh. Do you have a furnace for your garage yet? My folks are selling their house in Eagan and I know my dad is taking his out of the house over there. Let me know if your interested and I'll aks him what he wants for it.
