Did this on Saturday. Hardest part is accessing the starter to get it off, since mounting bolts are hard to get a angle on to get leverage on.
On two instances since sept. I went to start the truck and nothing happened. All lights went on, dim'ed a bit, but nothing from starter, not even the dreaded 'click-click....' Wait 15 min & it starts right up.
Although one tech write up seemed to assert you could do this w/out removing front DS tire, I don't see how its possible. Wish I hadn't just flushed/refilled cooling system, cause this is the only real access to the dreaded PHH heater hose as well... Saw mine and it doesn't look good, coolant type corrosion visible, but no leaking looking stains (you seen stuff on this yet Scott.... you DO NOT want this hose to fail on a road trip or inopertune time, its a bitch to get at, some toyo mechanics will tell you the only way to access it is to pull the head???)
With tire off you can get at the starter mount bolts. Top, forward facing bolt. Took a 17mm socket. 8-10 inch drive extention. 1/2 ratchet, with a 3 foot piece of heavy pipe as a breaker bar. Bottom rear facing bolt, you need a universal joint of the back of the socket to give you the right angle for enough clearence to work the ratchet. Probably took 1.5hrs to get it off given all the different combinations of tools I had to try to get leverage on the bolts initally. Once I finally got them loose it came right out.
Replaced contacts and plunger. This takes all of 40 min. 30 minutes to reinstall
