Got my hands on a invite to try out gmail beta. Been using it for a couple days now and it's pretty cool. The two main features that are an improvement on other free web based (MSN and Yahoo) email are:
2gig of storage/mail space. Conversation views of all message threads
There is also a little add on you can install that runs in your systray and pops up the new message (just like outlook 2003).
The only negative critics are crying about is that google scans your emails for key words and displays those little targeted text ads on the right side. I have no problem with the ads they are small conpared to Hotmails ads everywhere.
Should be available in the next few months. I might be able to get a couple invites if anyone wants to try the beta.
I'd like to try it if you get any invites. Hotmail has been extremely flaky for me lately...

Send them to Hauser and Cremator if you don't mind. I guess I don't get any yet. They give you a couple each week supposedly.

And I dont see any ads around my mailbox. I've never figured out what the hell people are talking about with that. Been using it since last fall.

There are targeted adds when you view a message on the right side. They are generated from key words in your email.

But they only show up about every 5th email mabey... Or mabey its only if there is relavent content to scan and advertise in the email text.

Yeah, I think that's what it is. I had a email from UPS and noticed adds on the side for CPS something. Must show adds for that emails key words only.
People are all cranky because of the fact that google is scanning their email is all. The ads are smaller compared to hotmail and contain no pictures so it's an improvement in my opinion. I only use free web based email for signing up for stuff anyway.
I still have unlimited noncompliance.com email addy/forwards/alias available if anyone needs.

Also, you get 2 free GB's of space. I think a small ad is a small price to pay for this service.
