So I want to get a DVD burner. What should I look for?

Questions: Can I burn CDs with a DVD burner, or only DVDs? The problem with my Desktop is that it isn't built to put in another internal drive. I would have to get an external DVD burner, which I guess isn't necessarily bad, then I can use it with my laptop as well.

Make sure you get Dual Layer would be the only recommendation I'd have for you.

They're all pretty cheap nowadays.

I got an NEC and it's working out just fine. Burned about 50 with no coasters yet.

Send Brad up to General Nanosystems - get either the NEC or Sony duel layer burner. Boon is correct they are very cheap (about $40).

You will just pull out your current CD burner and replace it with the DVD burner. The DVD burner will burn CDs and DVDs.

Go with the NEC as all my Sony's have problems reading lightly scratched or dirty discs, sometimes even pristine discs of poor quality...

75+ on my NEC, no coasters.

Yeah Brent is right - I can't recommend Sony as a decent burner based on my experience. I have had great luck with NEC and Pioneer.
