I have been running Ultimate (beta) on my laptop for 4 months without issue. I am planning on getting two copies. At work I got a new Dell workstation that included an upgrade to Vista. We aren't allowed to run Vista so I am using it on my laptop and I will be getting a upgrade for my home computer too. Anyway...

Advantages:
Better interface
Faster boot up (claimed)
Can use a flash drive as your virtual memory (seems to make the system feel faster)
Indexing while you are away (when you run a search its instant because it has already indexed everything)
More secure (claimed)

Disadvantages
Slower performance on older systems
Driver issues with some older stuff (on my laptop it picked up everything perfectly)
Different look and feel compared to XP

Differences in the versions:
Vista Home Basic- shitty doesn't include anything really.
Vista Home Premium - Includes networking and media center.

Vista Business - No media center but it has remote desktop.

Vista Ultimate - Has everything.

I am getting home premium.

One other note. It looks like the "upgrade" version is the way to go. If you get the full version or the "computer builder edition" you are limited to installing it on one computer. This is defined by the motherboard. If you replace the motherboard or upgrade it you need to purchase a new copy of vista.

That being said you can get great deals on the system builders edition at newegg.

Grabbed an upgrade from Sam's last night. The game pad I use doesn't have (Belkin N52)a Vista driver yet so I am not installing it on my main system yet. But I did put it on my extra system to test it out. You can install any version and not activate it for 30 days. All versions are on the DVD.

If you have XP Pro you can't upgrade your installation, you need to do a clean install. Set up will back up your old data but you should use the setting/file transfer wizard (which works great). You now run set up in windows and it reboots a couple times. Not sure how a fresh install would go with SATA drivers etc yet. Took about 45 mins to run set up on my Athlon 3500 system. No problems yet everything worked without updating any drivers. I plan to install WOW run some tests then install all the motherboard and video drivers to see if there is difference.

Yeah, I already heard him ranting, havent seen the vid tho (youtube blocked at work)...

I'm just not sold on actually "needing" this for my use's... Lots of bling, little substance imo.. (I didnt say NO substance, I'm sure there are some improvements, nice features, etc)...

Just not worth the hassel for me...

Yup - not a must have but an improvement (well in some respects).

The video is him at home talking about it.

XP for me until I'm forced to upgrade.
Tom's Hardware had an interesting gaming comparison and Vista sucked.
