I got a blue screen of death this weekend and was unable to recover anything off of my HD. "Unmountable Boot Volume" was the error message and it looks like the HD just went bad (3 years old IBM deskstar 40 gig). I am still trying to figure out if I can use it as a slave and get some of the files off of it but I haven't been able to get it to detect as of yet. I did a no no and bought a retail maxtor 40 gig for 75 bucks so I am up and running again but with LOTS of stuff to reload and download hehe.

I knew I could get something nicer for the money if I waited, I just couldn't wait. You know how that is when retail sucks you in because you need something at 9PM on Saturday and you can't wait until next week heh

Ouch! I feel you pain, I've lost two drives over the years, one at work (that cost me nearly two months of work!) and one at home (lost some save games) and I still don't back-up at home...

The 8GB dual layer burners just came out - make sure you get one of those when you finally buy one. They are only about $99-$150 right now. Media is hard to find, but they can burn the single layer stuff at 8x speed too (7min). Pioneer and Sony are probably the best.

Yeah that should work fine. I can't find any tests with that drive and the new DL disks but they aren't really out yet. 8X burning of DVD-R is the standard right now - and for $73, that's a great deal

Oops, just saw Sony came out with a 12x burner..... But it is like $150. 8X can do 4.7 gig in about 8 minutes, I bet 12x only shaves a couple minutes off that.
