What are the point of those bots?

I've seen those bots on forums before, like where a forum will be defunct for years but have like 30,000 comments from bots...

What are the point of them and what do they do? Does somebody make money off of them somehow?

Good question. When I set up this new forum there were 200 bots registered within an hour. I had to turn on "image" security, where you enter the letters from the image before registration etc. That worked to stop about 80% of the bots. The other 20% must have had humans solving the puzzles or it just kept putting random letters in. Then I added the secret question and only one bot has made it through.

As for what they do.... usually post advertisements or links. That warhammer site Hauser had up did have 30,000 posts after the bots took over. Looked like mostly ads. The other thing that kept getting posted was anime porn pictures. Not sure if other sites linked to those picture or if viewers came here to see them. I didn't notice any increase in web traffic on the stats so it didn't have much effect.
